Phone on O2, but not purchase directly with O2

I am about to upgrade my phone, which is currently an O2 contract. However, the phone I want is a lot more expensive directly through O2, so therefore I am buying from elsewhere, but staying with O2 network. Obviously, I want to keep my existing number, but am unsure how to go about getting the number transferred from old sim to new sim. Also, I assume I need to contact the current direct debit with O2 & set up a new one for the new contract?

Thanks

Are you buying the phone outright?....if so you can just use your current sim. If your buying a new contract then once its setup you call o2 and request they migrate the number you wish to keep to the new contract....this in turn cancels ypur old contract.
