Pay as you go abroad

Can someone advise me please on the following?
I'm going abroad next month and do not want to use my 4S on a contract.
I have an old Nokia and a pay as you go sim. I need no data, just mostly texts and maybe the odd call. What's the best tariff and how do I go about selecting it?

just  basic pay as you go sim, you will be charged international rates for calls & texts, you will get a text when you land saying the pricing for europe or outside the eu

Ok thank you, so just a top up via a cash machine is all I need to do? No selecting a particular tariff then.

yes just a £10 top up will as international calls & texts are still charged even if you get free text on your  normal tariff in the uk
