Pay and Go in Uganda

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi everybody,

I'm travelling to Uganda in a few weeks time and I've a Pay and Go mobile. When checking the tariff for use it says that everything's unavailable. Does this mean I can't use my UK O2 Pay and Go phone in Uganda?

The O2 page I'm using is http://international.o2.co.uk/internationaltariffs/travelling_abroad and there's a picture of the results page attached here just in case I'm not being clear.

You should be able to. Look here but I'm not sure whether the charges are current.

We have coverage in Uganda with the following network providers:

CelTel

MTN

Uganda Telecom

It's possible O2 don't have a carrier in Uganda, might be wise to call and check.

Puzzled why no charges are showing.

Otherwise charges will be:

Rest of the world.

Standard rates when outside of Europe

O2 Pay & Go customers will be charged at the following rates when using their phone outside of Europe

Hmmm, so now I have two official O2 websites telling me two different things. I'm not sure that's very helpful, but thanks for trying.

I think the costs are the same, my copy and paste wasn't that successful!

A little further on. O2 live chat tells me that PaG will work and that the costs for use are 24p/8p/7p/46p due to a recent rate revision. I'm sure that would have been splashed across the international pages if there had been an 80% reduction in call costs. Ah well, I'll go and buy an Orange SIM just in case. At least their website's a bit more coherent on international use.

Thanks for the attempts at help folks.

Hi

Just an idea, but if the handset is unlocked it might be an idea to think about buying a local sim as it might be a lot cheaper.

Airtel charge 420 shillings per min to call the UK. Google says that's about 11p.

Ok, I'm now fully equipped with an Orange SIM ready to head to Uganda. After all the time I spent trying to find out if O2 Pay and Go will work I've still got two answers - "yes, it will" and "no, it won't" and a range of pricing to gamble on if I took the chance. You might be interested in the screenshot of the live chat session (I've deleted the operator's name, don't want the poor soul in trouble just for not knowing what he's talking about - I know a lot of people who don't know what they're talking about slight_smile ) just to show how frustrating this experience has been with O2.

I'm an O2 contract customer for my own phone and never really thought of using another telco. I'm just sorry that I spent nearly two hours on trying to sort this out with O2 and it still being unresolved instead of less than five minutes with Orange.

Alex, thanks for the suggestion but that's covered. MTN Uganda do a prepaid SIM card that works out at a bit less than 5p / min to call the UK. The reason I want a UK mobile with me is because I'm leading a group of ten young people to Uganda and need a number that I can leave with their parents just in case they need to get hold of us.

Thanks for your help folks, but the easiest solution was not to go with O2.
