Last week i lost my phone i rang O2 inwhich they blocked my number and sent a new sim out. My phone was returned to me yesterday. I took old sim out and put new in but it still says no service.

You need to contact customer service. They will have blocked the IMEI of tthe phone and put a block on your account. Both need removing.
