Calls when abroad

I have been charged for receiving calls that I have not answered when abroad.  How can I prevent this happening in future?  Do I need to turn off voicemail?

Yes we always recommend turning off vm before traveling.

@AnonymousI can confirm this to be true. My lads get a completely different message to the one my husband receives...(when I turn VM on...which isnt often as I travel abroad frequently....)
