I think we are talking at cross purposes here. I was presuming that the op had paid off her old contract which cost them £400. If so, the old phone is theirs to keep.
If everything for the new contract is returned under the change of mind policy and returned within 14 days, then they only have to pay the airtime used.
That's what the Change of mind policy is about. You change your mind.

You wont get any money paid off your device plan to upgrade early refunded, as you have closed your Credit Agreement.
You have signed up for a new contract basically.
If you upgraded before the 1st July you have 28days to return the handset and either
a. move to a sim only contract or
b. choose a new handset and airtime agreement
as @Cleoriff said you only pay for the airtime and any additional charges..
I would do this instore as well.
