this morning i hade £2.48 credit, i tried ringing my taxi for work a few times, no one answered the phone so i hung up and tried again. after the 3rd time my phone directed me to the top up page as i all of a sudden had 0 credit. why was i charged for unanswered calls.

Some call centres, connect you and then have a ringing tone whilst you wait on "hold" so that is why you may have been charged.
You can always ring 4445 and ask if they can see the call and the duration.
