I am currently on a contract but am able to upgrade. I now have a work phone - can I switch from contract to pay but retain my phone number

Yes you can. 

You need to call customer service and they will migrate your contract to PAYG and send you a SIM with your number on it.

You will need to pay anything you owe on your contract too.

You can always keep your phone number but you will need to contact o2 customer services to cancel and fully pay up your mobile contract. Then you can get a PAYGO sim sent to you.
