Hi there, thanks to the three people who replied before I edited the original message as I didn't want to waste anyone's time!

 

I did crack the problem:  I'd read the user guide which did not cover what I needed to know, the suggestions on Google didn't work and Nokia support sent me a Youtube link for a different phone ...

 

none of my friends could understand why the Settings icon isn't on the home screen (as it is on all their different models) and everyone said you just drag it - you don't, it's a bit more complicated than that on the 3.4 but I am now set up how I want to be

Have you looked at these instructions as from Android 9 things have changed.

Also now the settings are always accessible by swiping down the top of the screen and most things are selectable here, its also customisable.
