How to set up Microsoft account so that I can access apps

I have had this phone Nokia for almost a year now When I try to set up Microsoft account it seems to be that I need a different email address I am not able to get any further Not sure what I need to do to set it up

Would appreciate help with this as there are a few things like BBC news ie

Set yourself up a gmail address and just use that for your Microsoft account.

Try ending it with outlook.com

Mine was changed from hotmail.co.uk to outlook.com when they did the big change over.

I just use my btinternet.com to use and set up my account

I used gmail without problems and everything synced on the 1024.
