Thanks @jonsie

Great to have you playing along too and hope you come up with something as a guess for the two.

Have you thought anymore about putting your name forward as a contestant - as the subjects vary slightly each week?

I'm still considering it to be honest @Mi-Amigo . My Wednesdays and Thursdays are normally busy for me and it can be late at night when I log on. Today has been an ēxception and people are probably aware that I'm more of a night owl these days.

Have just realised that I didn't post any answers....

In my defence I am a useless man, and after work yesterday cooked a BBQ and went for a walk round a local nature trail.

Hi @gmarkj

Thanks for your post.

I can well understand that after work and with other commitments that you were not able to post your answers before the midnight deadline.

As the quiz is meant to be fun, and you earlier said you had four answers and were searching offline for the others, I think to be fair that you should post the answers that you have today - Friday - and ask you to please do so.

After you have given your answers, I`ll give the reults with the correct answers.

After I have given the correct answers, those who are playing along can then post as to how many they got right.

Good luck.

Thanks for the understanding (and patience!) @Mi-Amigo !

So, here are my (unlikely) answers:

Q1 Who scored the first goal in the 1966 FIFA World Cup final?

A1 England (not sure about the player...)

Q2 What type of animal is a leporine?

A2 A mammal, I think it is a type of cat.

Q3 Where, according to the rhymn, did the Owl and the Pussycat sail to?

A3 The land where the Bong Tree grows.

Q4 When was Candlemas?

A4 Given the phrasing of the question I am guessing it has already happened this year.

I am not 100% of the occasion, but I would say close to Christmas - so perhaps end of January?

Q5 How many men did a centurian command in the Roman Empire?

A5 Century = 100

Q6 Which of the Channel Islands is closest to France?

A6 I think Jersey is closest of the two but not sure...

The results:

Here are the answers given by @gmarkj :

Q1 Who scored the first goal in the 1966 FIFA World Cup final?

A1 England (not sure about the player...)

- Incorrect. Geoff Hurst of England scored the second goal - 18mins after kick-off

- The correct answer is Helmut Haller of Germany - 12 mins after kick-off

Q2 What type of animal is a leporine?

A2 A mammal, I think it is a type of cat.

- it is a mammal - but is not a cat - so I will award half star - it is a hare.

Q3 Where, according to the rhymn, did the Owl and the Pussycat sail to?

A3 The land where the Bong Tree grows.

- correct = awarded star

Q4 When was Candlemas?

A4 Given the phrasing of the question I am guessing it has already happened this year.

I am not 100% of the occasion, but I would say close to Christmas - so perhaps end of January?

- not at end of January but on 2 February - as the answer is fairly close, I will award a half star

The date, first recorded in 1014AD, celebrates the Purification of the Virgin Mary, in presentation of baby Jesus in Bethlehem.

Q5 How many men did a centurian command in the Roman Empire?

A5 Century = 100

- incorrect. This is the QI-style question, where the answer is not what many assume.

The correct answer is 80. Before Julius Caesar and throughout the time of the Roman Empire, the full strength of a Roman legion was 4800 men - of 10 cohorts, each consisting of six centuries of 80 men led by a centurian.

Q6 Which of the Channel Islands is closest to France?

A6 I think Jersey is closest of the two but not sure...

- incorrect. Jersey is 20km [12 miles] from the Cotentin peninsula, Normandy, France.

The correct answer is Alderney, the third largest island, which is 15km [10 miles] from La Hague on the Cotentin peninsula, Normandy, France.

Well done @gmarkj

You are awarded a total of star star [one full, and two half stars].

How did those playing along do? How many questions did you get right? Please feel free to post your comments and thanks everyone for playing along.

The quiz is open to all members. If you would like to be considered as a contestant and have not already posted your name, please add it or pm me [ @Mi-Amigo ] and I`ll add it to the list to be drawn at random by @EmilieT .

Ouch. Must go and start reading those encyclopedias again!
Didn't even realise there were more than 2 Chanel Islands, and the centurion one is new to me. Have we been counting wrong all this time and a century is only 80 years?!?

OK.

So I knew Helmut Haller scored first. Was reminded of that when he died about 6-7 years ago I think.

I knew Leprorine was a Hare or Rabbit.

Candlemas Feb 2nd (tick)

Owl and pussycat (tick)

Then fell apart with Centurion and Channel Island questions. joy

No, a century is not 80 years but 100 years.

The confusion comes from the origin of the terms.

Centurian dates from 1530s - from Latin centuria [group of one hundred = as in six centuries of 80 men] and decura [company of ten = as in cohorts].

Centuria was not used in sense of 100 years until 1620s.
