THE ANSWERS:

Q1 [PEOPLE - 1] What was the entertainer Bing Crosby`s real first name ?

A1    Harry

Q2 [PLACE - 1]   The Old Bailey criminal court is on the site of which former prison ?

A2    Newgate

Q3 [LITERATURE - 1]  What is the name of the flying island in Jonathan Swift`s "Gulliver`s Travels" ?

A3    Laputa

Q4 [FOOD & DRINK - 1] From which fruit is the drink Slivovitz made ?

A4    damson plums

Q5 [PEOPLE - 2]  What was the middle name of the author Jerome K Jerome ?

A5    Klapka - after a Hungarian friend of his father.

Q6 [PLACES - 2]   Which is Europe`s highest volcano ?

A6    Teide, Tenerife - inactive [4207m, 13803ft high]

         NOT = Etna - active [3323m, 10902ft]; Vesuvius - last active 1944 [1281m, 4203ft high]

[note: question did not specify active or inactive]

Two members [see Results] mentioned Elbrus in the Caucasus Mountains.

I checked this. NASA Earth Observatory website states Elbrus is 5642m, 18,510ft high,

but notes "there is disagreement about where the border between Europe and Asia is located.               One commonly cited boundary for the eastern edge of Europe is the Ural Mountains, which                   brings the Caucasus Mountains within Europe".

Differences of opinion affect the ruling on Elbrus, so I will accept Elbrus as an alternative answer

Q7 [LITERATURE - 2]   What is the name of the farm in George Orwell`s "Animal Farm" ?

A7    Manor Farm

Q8 [FOOD & DRINK - 2]  What is the drink of champagne and stout better known as ?

A8    Black Velvet
