WELCOME to the White Room Thursday Quiz...

 

Each week, there are EIGHT questions, from a range of categories.

                                                           THIS WEEK`S EIGHT QUESTIONS

 

Q1 [people]: Who was the third longest reigning British monarch?

 

Q2 [geography]: Raleigh is the capital city of which US State?

 

Q3 [nature]: What do male mosquitos feed on?

 

Q4 [words]: What is petrology the study of?

 

Q5 [literature]: What is the name of the only Irish character to appear in a Shakespeare play?

 

Q6 [sport]: How many players are there in a water polo team?

 

Q7 [art - new category]: What is the name of the Belgian surrealist artist who painted The Son Of Man and Man In A Bowler Hat ?

 

Q8 [events]: In which month is the Henley Regatta held in England? 

 

The White Room Thursday Quiz will be open to all members of the Community.

Those who want to take part will need to pm [private message] me [Mi-Amigo] with their answers between 00.01 [one minute after midnight] and 23.59 [11.59pm] on Thursday 30 January 2020.

Please do not post your answers on the thread.

The answers - and the results for each player taking part - will be posted on Friday morning.

 

Each member will be awarded star for each correct answer. In addition, each member who gives

              EIGHT correct answers               SIX correct answers

                   will be awarded                       will be awarded

Each member must pm [private message] their answers to me [Mi-Amigo] between 00.01 [one minute after midnight] and 23.59 [11.59pm] on Thursday 30 January 2020.

No member is to post any answer on the thread.

Any answer received before 00.01 on Thursday and/or after 23.59 [11.59pm] on Thursday will be declared void.

No googling, wiki, youtube search for answers.

 

I hope that those who have taken part in a previous White Room Thursday Quiz, the Christmas Quiz, the New Year Quiz, and/or the Revenge - inc

Last week, four players each answered all eight questions correctly and each was awarded the Silver Thinker; and two players each answered three questions correctly and each was awarded three stars. Can they, and you, do as well or better this week? Please come and have a go...

A1: George III. Longest reigning - Elizabeth II; second longest reigning - Victoria 

 

Q2 [geography]: Raleigh is the capital city of which US State?

A2: North Carolina

 

Q3 [nature]: What do male mosquitos feed on?

A3: this is the QI-style question, where what most people think is the answer is wrong.

The correct answer is nectar, but, one member gave an alternative answer, which on checking, proved to also be correct - more details in RESULTS [below] 

 

Q4 [words]: What is petrology the study of?

A4: rocks

 

Q5 [literature]: What is the name of the only Irish character to appear in a Shakespeare play?

A5: MacMorris

 

Q6 [sport]: How many players are there in a water polo team?

A6: 7 inc goalie

[although there are 6 in outfield]

 

Q7 [art - new category]: What is the name of the Belgian surrealist artist who painted The Son Of Man and Man In A Bowler Hat ?

A7: Rene Magritte

Female mosquitoes also feed on nectar generally, but they need a feed of blood before they lay their eggs.

A1: Victoria - incorrect; A2: "it isn`t" [a State capital] - incorrect; A3 "female mosquito" - when I read this I assumed it was incorrect but, as always, check various resources. It turns out that in one species of mosquito do indeed eat the larvae of other mosquitos, inclduing females. Therefore, I am awarding star for this answer. I, too, have learned something new...; A4 "oil" - incorrect; A5 "Falstaff" - incorrect; A6 "5" - incorrect; A7 "Klint" - incorrect; A8 "June" - incorrect. For one correct answer, which no-one else gave, awarded one star

Must admit to having two answers for Q5. Luckily I guessed the correct one.

As for those pesky mosquitos, the bane of my life when abroad. As a family, if they are going to chew on anyone, it's always me, even when I am plastered with repellent. Shirty

My answer to the Henley Regatta was a guess as I knew it was in the Summer, sometime.
