I would think that it's to stop all manner of insects and slugs etc from getting at the body especially if the outer coffin rots....but that's just my theory for what it's worth. It old also be incredibly difficult for the ghouls and other lowlife to lift the coffin.

It is custom and practice to bury all our Royals in lead lined coffins though. Apparently Diana's coffin was rumoured to have weighed 50 st. (over 300kg)
