BREAKING NEWS

All four of the illegally released lynx were captured yesterday.

One of them died last night!

I hope the idiots who released them are proud of themselves. Such stupidity.😠

https://news.sky.com/story/illegally-released-lynx-cat-dies-after-capture-in-scottish-highlands-1328...

The head of Scottish Conservation said:

"We can only imagine the stress that all four of the recovered lynx must have experienced after being thrust into an entirely new and extremely harsh environment to fend for themselves."

So sorry to hear that @Cleoriff

Indeed the stress for them would have been awful, wondering what happened.   Whoever did that needs to have the same happen to them.

I do hope the other LYNX recover well.

People need to realise that the Scottish Wildlife and Conservation staff know what they are doing.

These lynx have been bred in captivity and are kept in the correct environment for now.

Also taught to hunt and are fed.

Releasing them in the terribly freezing conditions with no food is simply cruel.

I can't imagine how cold, hungry and stressed they must have been.

Just too abhorrent to think about.

I hope the remaining three make it.

What you say is total common sense @Cleoriff

When I first heard that there were Lynxes back in the wilds I was hoping that it was a good thing and they would repopulate

I know now how stupid a concept that was

I don't think it's stupid at all @jonsie

The purpose of the projest is EVENTUALLY to release them back in the wild. How wonderful that will be.

However, The Re-Wilding folk think it's taking the Scottish Conservation Trust far too long.

So they took matters into their own hands and shoved 4 lynx out into the wild on the coldest night of the year

The shock killed one of them.

Heartbreaking. 💔

Very true @Cleoriff

It takes years of planning to ensure that there is a good hope of success.

@jonsie

I remember

Salisbury plain reintroduction of the

Great Bustard  birds

Took years of preparation,

then each season waiting for the youngsters to arrive.  It was a success with lots of hard dedicated work.

I  have been following this story of the irresponsible release of 4 lynx on the General News Feed off my laptop.

Sooo angry that one of lynx has died ..... How much that magnificent animal would have sufferred and the other 3 lynx had they not been professionally rescued in time by the Scottish Conservation good people and saved them on the coldest night of the Winter so far. Yes, they are safe for the time being and being well looked after.

Cleoriff ? will you include me in any updates you may get about the lynx please ... ?

@RunrigForever

I know of your love of big cats (Tigers being your personal favourite and Cheetahs and Snow Leopards are mine) so of course I'll keep you updated. As far as I know, the remaining 3 Lynx are doing ok and are recovering from their ordeal.

However, the Wildlife Trust states that all 4 lynx  were starving and in very poor condition!

So whoever kept them illegally and then released them are to be accused of extreme cruelty.

They should lock them up and throw away the key as far as I'm concerned.

Just to conclude this story of the remaining 3 lynx. They remain in quarantine but are  doing well. No sign of illnesses or infection, although underweight when captured.

The Royal Zoology institute of Scotland stated they were obviously bred in captivity as they are tame and used to human interaction.

Before any Eurasian lynx are released, staff have to slowly reduce the time the lynx spend with humans.

They have to be taught to hunt alone to increase their chance of survival. They also have to experience all types of weather and learn to make dens.

The RZIS have put out a country-wide notice to request anyone keeping Eurasian Lynx in captivity to hand them over to the Zoo (with a promise of no penalty if they leave the animals safe and in an area easily found.)

The rest should be left to the Rewilding Project Staff who will prepare the lynx for a staged release WHEN they are ready to cope alone.

They will NOT be announcing when and where the lynx have been released.
