An article on the Daily Mail online:

This lightning charger was purchased from an official retailer.

Now it appears to be a fake story where the facts were not checked. Astounded

Well the obvious difference here is that past stories highlighted the people affected used 3rd party cables which caused the issue.

This one being an original accessory will be I think more closely looked at by Apple. Who knows what they will do to appease the owner. New cable / new iPhone 5 or free upgrade to the 5c. One can only surmise.

In my experience in using the lightening cable for my iPhone 5 and 5s I've never had an issue thank heavens.

Even though things are quality and safety tested its feasible that a few out of the millions they make and sell May have an issue.

Just glad the guy , his daughter and home are ok.

when will the daily fail print an accurate report the part that failed was not the charger but the usb to lightning lead that after 6 months could have developed a cable fault.

If the charger had failed the lead would be intact. the pictures prove this doh!

Also why is the plastic of the lighting end cracked like it has been tamperd with.

Also It has been commented that the lead is a fake look closley at the photos looks like the lightining end is not genuine 2 part construction unlike apples solid extruded tip top picture look at right hand edge from plastic insert with contacts and compare with an original.

I hava a fake lead we were given and it is the same will post pictures in a bit.

spot the fake lead

The cable in the mail photo is not a genuine oe one. Most likely a pound shop rip off cable...
Apple will do nothing but reinforce their statement to use only genuine products which I support completely for all phones and all accessories.
