Hinkley Point gets final investment approval

Investment in the first new nuclear plant to be built in the UK in 20 years - at Hinkley Point, Somerset - has secured final approval.

The decision came at a board meeting of French utility EDF - the company financing most of the £18bn project.

Anyway, they've given it the go ahead and the point of the thread is right or wrong, not yes or no.....

Of course it's right.... to produce 7% of the UK's energy requirements by other means would almost certainly cost significantly more.

Modern nuclear technology is safe.

France's domestic electricity is one of the cheapest in the EU.

So solar power or wind power not a good idea then?

Both good ideas but not cost wise to produce the same 7% of the UK's requirements that Hinkley will.

How long will it take to build the nuclear power station?

A long time......but the French have a lot of experience building these facilities.
