Hey everyone!

Despite a solid week of fireworks going off tonight is officially bonfire night where once a year the UK commemorates the failed plot to blow up the house of lords and murder King James and celebrates the arrest of the most famous of the gunpowder plotters, Guy Fawkes!

Traditionally, bonfires are lit and fireworks set off with the odd Guy getting burnt on the fire for good measure. Do you have any plans for this years bonfire night? Is there an annual fireworks display that you usually visit and what do you think of the tradition of bonfire night in general?

Yes @Martin-O2, I'm just about to get ready for a Bon Fire Night party friends are having round the corner from me. Fireworks and the traditional burning of the guy plus food and drink.

I'm looking forward to it and any posts I make in the early hours, I apologise for now, just in case

One of the traditions that seems to be long gone is the tap tap at the door and a small voice yelling 'penny for the guy, mister!'.....

Unsafe in today's world:smileysad:

I shall be hiding away from the thousands of pounds being pointlessly burned up to celebrate attempted murder.

@Martin-O2

And to you

          The Fifth of November

    Remember, remember!
    The fifth of November,
    The Gunpowder treason and plot;
    I know of no reason
    Why the Gunpowder treason
    Should ever be forgot!
    Guy Fawkes and his companions
    Did the scheme contrive,
To blow the King and Parliament
    All up alive.
    Threescore barrels, laid below,
    To prove old England's overthrow.
But, by God's providence, him they catch,
With a dark lantern, lighting a match!
    A stick and a stake
    For King James's sake!
If you won't give me one,
    I'll take two,
    The better for me,
    And the worse for you.
A rope, a rope, to hang the Pope,
A penn'orth of cheese to choke him,
A pint of beer to wash it down,
And a jolly good fire to burn him.
Holloa, boys! holloa, boys! make the bells ring!
Holloa, boys! holloa boys! God save the King!
    Hip, hip, hooor-r-r-ray!

Sounds like a plan to me @Glory1:laughing:

@jonsie It's interesting how some traditions die out and some stick around. Perhaps the Halloween trick or treating has taken over as the main door knocking activity?

I think you and my cat have the exact same plan there @Anonymous. :joy:

That rhyme takes me back @Anonymous! Not heard that in full for years!

Our civic display occurred on Saturday evening, though local residents are setting theirs off now.

I won't be doing anything out of the norm nowadays. Just making sure my cats are in and curtains drawn.

@jonsie  I remember the days when we used to make a guy and with a gang of friends stand on the street corner asking passersby for a penny for the guy.

Once when we couldn't be bothered, we dressed one of the young kids up, sat him in a pram and used him Instead .

What a terrible childhood to be sure :joy:
