A third one already though? I feel like the first re-make was just 6 months ago. I'm probably incorrect. Time flies! I haven't even seen that first one yet, so would need to if these are at all linked, before I watch the 3rd (or 2nd).

Looking at it, don’t think this is a sequel to the last one..
in this trailer it says that the stuff belonged to Grandpa.. so I’m guessing it’s a nod to the boys from the original..
As Egon was the technical one .. I’m taking the plunge in saying that he would be the one to stash the gear..
and as Harold Ramis passed away last year.. this is would be a fitting tribute / memorial to him.. Not to mention the kid is tall, white and nerdy ... none of the other three had all those qualities!

But I could be wrong (and often am)
