ANDROID fans have been put on alert about shock claims that Google are planning on scraping the hugely popular smartphone and tablet OS.

I hope Google do take responsibility for securing the Kernel away from phone manufacturers and prevent operators from blocking updates because these devices operate as much on wi-fi as they do on the mobile network  so sitting on updates for months on end really isn't acceptable anymore given the sensitive data stored as well as the sensitive tasks such as banking that handsets are used for these days.

This is why I don't buy my hardware through O2 (or any other operator for that matter)

If Google decided to charge customers for Android, Apple would be dancing in the streets.

There are lots of compromises that you have to accept with free software, because the customer is essentially the product. But the fact that Google are possibly looking at a change in business model could be a positive move, and if it means that you end up with an operating system that’s more secure, takes better care of your private data, and provides you with regular updates (i.e. without expecting you to join a long queue), then it might be a product that’s worth paying for.
