The BBC have announced that two patients in the UK have been diagnosed with the coronavirus.

No further details have been given other than they are both members of the same family and are receiving specialist NHS care.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-51325192

At present, 83 Britons and 27 foreign nationals are flying back to the UK from Wuhan, the Chinese city at the centre of the outbreak.

The flight is due to land at RAF Brize Norton at 13:30 GMT.

The UK passengers will then be taken to Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral and quarantined for two weeks.

And I heard on the radio on Friday, 2 heading off to Vietnam for 2 weeks anniversary holiday... Now is not the time I'd choose to spend 12 or more hours in a plane to or from anywhere... 🙄

Worse was the next message read out from someone just back from Vietnam saying how wonderful it all is. 😑

There is a nasty bug going around, one that could kill you, one that spreads from person to person before any obvious symptoms exist.

I would not be dying to spend loads money to go anywhere "exotic" for a few weeks - or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

I agree with you @pgn. I'm a tad worried that my grandson set off on a cruise yesterday. (Not his choice but a 21st birthday present, with his Mum and her partner going.

Despite my other half laughing at my concerns, I am still concerned. It's a Caribbean cruise but even so....

Add to that you will remember the thread I posted about him being unaware of the cost of using phones on this cruise. So he set off yesterday and just before he boarded the ship, his phone was turned off.

Nightmare for anyone his age. His phone is usually glued to his hand...tongue_winking

People would be crazy to spend that amount of time, as you say, enclosed in a tin can with 300+ other people, breathing the same recycled air.

On a cruise I think that even though its the Caribbean, each different country would be scanning visitors for the virus. If just one person was tested positive then we know the whole ship would be quarantined.

People who have already booked though wouldn't want to cancel so as you say, this could well develop into a pandemic.

I think that's it. People won't want to cancel. I know they have been planning this for a year.

However, I was sure they would have taken him to Florida/Disney.

He loves it there and the last time he went he was a bit too small to go on some of the rides. Now age 21 and over 6ft, he would have preferred a Florida villa holiday. rolling_eyes

A query on holiday travel and insurance:

Surely, travelling to an area where there is a likelihood of catching some nasty bug, one that has been used as a reason for governments to clamp down on travel, means any holiday insurance is automatically invalidated?  The Repatriation component of the policy alone is bound to be affected.

And would you not be able to claim the cost of any planned travel back from your insurance now that travel to/within such regions has been reduced/restricted?

Sticky area, travel and holiday insurance.

People tend to disregard travel advice thinking it would never happen to them. But the worst cr4p can happen to anyone at any given time as I well know from personal experience.

That is why governments need to enforce travel restrictions to prevent the spread of the virus.

Why tempt fate.

Re Travel Insurance @pgn

I think if you travelled to an area where travel has officially been classed as off limits then it would become invalid. The problem is, apart from China, I haven't heard any Dept of Health warnings against travel to any other country?

Or any other governments across the world for that matter.

Entry to certain Asian countries and Chinese Dependent Territories (like Hong Kong) are being restricted - Vietnam included, except for trips of up to 15days (!), and a quarantine too.

More here, if interested: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice

Caribbean region seems to be unaffected at this time, @Cleoriff.

He came back from Thailand and Malaysia last Monday. I spoke to him yesterday, there were no checks at Bangkok or Manila airports for outbound passengers nor indeed on arrival at the airport in Berlin. I was quite shocked. As I said before about being couped up in a plane for 7 hours at a time, no facemasks were offered although some passengers were wearing them having bought before they got to the airports in question.

He has no symptons and isn't unduly worried. That's left up to me.
