THE ANSWERS

Q1 What is the next number in this sequence...

         8   5   4   9   1   7

A1  6

       given numbers are in alphabetical order. 8 = eight; 5 = five; 4 = four; 9 = nine; 1 = one; 7 = seven;

       so next is 6 = six.

Q2 Five people are eating apples.

      A finishes before B but after C; D finishes before E but after B.

      What is the finishing order - from first to finish to last to finish ?

A2 CABDE

      A finished before B but after C = CAB; D finished afer B = CABD; E finished after D - CABDE

Q3 What is the next letter in this sequence

         A    U    O    U

A3  E - this is the hardest question, and was not taken off the internet.

        given letters are the second letter in days of the week

         A = sAturday; U = sUnday; O = mOnday; U = tUesday;

         so next is E = wEdnesday,

Q4 How can 8 + 6 = 2 [eight plus six equals two] ?

A4   on a clock, watch, or time

        8am plus 6 hours = 2pm

Q5 If BLAU = 5; GELB = 2; GRUN = 3

       What number does ROSA = ?

A5  6

       given words are German for colours, number are points for ball potted in snooker.

        BLAU = blue = 5; GELB = yellow = 2; GRUN = green = 3;

        so ROSA = pink = 6

Q6 Susan and Lisa are playing each other at tennis and bet each other £1 on each win in each game they play.

      Susan won 3 bets, but Lisa won £5.

      How many games in total did Susan and Lisa play ?

A6  11 [eleven]

       Susan won 3 games. For Lisa to win back, had to play another 3 games = 6 games; for Lisa to win £5

        had to play a further 5 games = 6 + 5 = 11 games.

Q7 What is the next letter in this sequence

         D   R    M   F    S   L

A7  T

       given letters are initial letter of notes in musical score.

       D = do; R = re; M = me; F = fa; S = so; L = la;

       so T = ti

Q8 Turn me on my side and I am everything. Cut me in half and I am nothing.

        What am I ?

A8  Number 8 - on side = infinity; in half = 0

Q9 What is the next word in this sequence

         OPTS    POTS    SPOT   STOP

A9  TOPS - given words are anagram of each other, in alphabetical order, so next is TOPS

Q10 A mother tells her son that she will pay him £6 per hour for the six seconds that he will  take to wash his

         hands before dinner.

        The son took six seconds to wash his hands, so how much did his mother have to pay him ?

A10   1p [one penny]

          £6 for one hour = 600p for one hour [60 mins]; 10p for 60 seconds; so 1p for 6 secs.
