Hi Sue, I'm just in Thailand on an extended vacation, see how I adapt to 3 months here then I can make an informed decision as to retiring here permantly. We have an idea of peoples ages on the forum but unfortunately mental age is a little more difficult to determine:smileywink:

I think I am probably one of, if not the oldest on the forum being a few years from official retirement age (you do the maths:smileyhappy:)

I spent the biggest part of my working life as a motor mechanic and when I worked for main dealers, the servicing always had to be done by franchised dealers using genuine parts. I believe that all changed under new European legislation and that you are free to have your car serviced at any reputable garage providing:

The date of service interval is as per the manufacturers schedule,

The service itself is carried out exactly as per the manufacturers service schedule,

Genuine manufacturers parts and recommended lubricants are used.

You keep signed receipts and invoices to prove the servicing has been carried out to the manufacturers schedule.

Obviously warranty repairs have to be carried out by the manufacturer.

The main reason people use independent garages is down to price but bear in mind the sheer overheads of a large franchise that has to maintain staff, specialised equipment and more importantly, suitably trained technicians.

A vehicle manufacturer can however refuse a warranty claim where there is evidence of lack of maintenance, inappropriate work practices or where a non-genuine replacement part has failed or caused other damage.

Hope this helps.

Hey Sue

I'm not really 18 wink but I DO appreciate an older woman anyway slight_smile (personal info is restricted to email addresses and phone numbers unless by PM as they can incite spammers to bombard you with rubbish ect...)

I'm definately a die hard android fan and my good friend "bandofbrothers" is a die hard apple fan, so you will always get a balance by going somewhere in between the 2 of us. Most of the time when we are not helping people we are taking the micky out of users of other phone platforms - It's just part of the banter on here and all taken in good taste tongue

There you go using my favourite word again MI5 !

Welcome to the forum Sue.

I now you'll either recieve some good advice , help or just off topic conversation here.

Its all well balanced !  wink

Take care.

I think the men in white coats are coming to get me as I have not yet changed my printer cartridge and it is now 7.53 on Sat am and I have got a lot to do today! You have not been on the forum long either - what is a "ponderer" I take it there is a list of ranks and levels somewhere that I need to read?

Dear Band of Brothers

I know your name from my late father - he had a book or film or something of that name. Is that right? Is it a military reference? You will be pleased to hear I am veering towards itunes at moment because I think the playback will be better in my car. Not sure how to compare as only ever used my ipod nano in my i10. What do you think? Have you ever tried Android in a car stereo? Sorry MI5!

Dear Jonsie

Is it hot in Thailand? I think MI5 is jealous and I know my Mum would be she is most unhappy about the weather at the moment.

I am aware there are people on the net who specifically guarantee to service and collect your car as per the manufacturers specifications. I have not yet priced them up to see if they are actually a lot cheaper although every penny helps at the moment.

I was mostly concerned that if I did use an internet supplier then went back to the place I bought the car afterwards they may play up if there was a claim. However, nothing personal, but 9 times out of 10 when it comes to a warranty they seem to say "wear and tear" it seems to me. And indeed, my Mum also has an older Hyundai she inherited from my Dad and when that developed a fault on the clutch they did not tell us it was a manufacturing fault. They tried to charge us £400! It was only after my brother did some research on the net into the problem they changed their tune. However, that was actually a different dealer to the one we bought it off - who my Dad thought was ok - and swapped to having gone off the one he originally bought it off.

Having said that, as it is such a new car and I may finish up part exing it in a few years depending on how things go would it be safest and best to stay with the dealer? How much value would it add to my car to have a dealer servicing stamp in my book for the next 5 years? For the sake of 50 quid it seems like a false economy to be honest but I don't know that much about cars.

Not that I am allowed another new car! Previously I had a Ford Fiest for 7 years which was fine but I then bought an Aygo brand new which I hated and lost a fortune on for reasons which I won't go into. Then purchased a Suzuki Swift GTI which I loved but then I swapped it for the i10 because it did not have ipod connectivity! I thought you might like that! Now, I want bluetooth of course, which it does not have hence I may part ex when that comes in. But as you know, you should keep cars for at least what 3 years? and I have averaged a new/virtually brand new one for the last 5 years. My Hyundai i10 was pre-reg and I picked it up end last May. However, I think now I will stay with Hyundai and I suspect this time I will simply have a manufacturers stereo with bluetooth installed rather than having a brand new car as it has everything else that I want - nippy but good on petrol, remote locking and a/c. It even has alloys but they don't concern me! I am also having problems with my car insurance provider but I won't start on that subject just yet - I will give you a break right now to digest the other information!

I take it you drive a Honda do you since the link is Honda? What are the roads like in Thailand? Never been that far afield myself other than Kenya and Florida - are you marooned in a padi field? I think the nearest I will get to Thailand the way my finances are is the Lonely Planet calendar I nearly bought this year!

Have fun!

Hello Sue and Good Morning,

Band of Brothers is my all time favourite Tv Mini Series set in World war 11, which follows a platoon of American Soldiers from Easy Company, part of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division.
