how can I change the date that my payment is made by direct debt? I took out the contract at the beginning of the month hoping that I would be charged at the beginning of the month but this is not the case

You can reach the Payment Management team on 0800 902 0217.
The opening times are:
Monday to Friday – 8am to 8pm
Saturday – 8am to 6pm
Sunday – 9am to 6pm

That is not how o2 work (or to be fair a lot of Mobile Networks)
You will need to call o2 on 0800 902 0217 and they can help change it..

@billingquery As you may now know, your bill date is aligned to the date you joined O2 but the payment date for that bill is 14 days later.
