I have just been informed by o2 that text messages that go above 160 characters are charged as a media message. Can anyone tell me if this is something new or as it been in for a while?
I find it appalling

It very much depends on your handset, like others have said.
A standard text is 160 characters. Depending on your handset, if you go over this your handset may do one of two things - 1) convert it into 2,3,4 texts and send them seperately or 2) convert it into an mms to send it in one go.
If your phone is one that converts it into mms thats when you get a charge, if your phone doesn't convert to mms then you won't be charged. O2 can only explain it to you, they can't make your phone do something it can't do, so they really can't be blamed for when it happens.

Good Person, thank you. will I make any progress by popping into a shop? can they make changes to my phone? i am a scout leader so I often send lengthy messages giving directions etc etc
If the phone you have converts to mms by default, there won't be any way of changing it. As I said earlier, it very much depends on your handset. if it converts it converts, if it doesn't it doesn't.
