O2's current data plans are a joke!

I'm halfway through a 24 month contract and like with all my previous contracts, I'm at the point where I'm looking to downgrade to a slightly cheaper tarrif. I went into the O2 store today and was slightly disappointed at the lack of tarrifs that centred around internet usage, which is where I use my phone the most.
I'm currently on the £35 a month plan which gives me 900 minutes and unlimited texts. I also have the smartphone data bolt-on which gives me 750mb for £5. I discovered that this particular plan no longer exists and if I downgraded, I would be paying just over £31 and the only bolt-on option available is a 500mb package for £6.
So I would be paying more for my internet and be getting less. Why is this?

Put simply, because the prices have gone up and all the tariffs have changed since you took out your current tariff.
Data now comes as 100mb for £3, 500mb for £6 and 1GB for £10.
Here's all the tariff info on a chart...

But your post is wrong Ryan, in that the 500mb bolt on clearly isnt the only one as you now have a choice of data bolt ons, which you didn't have before, and with mms and tethering included I find the current packages offer the best value they ever have. At least for me they do, but it's true you can't suit everyone.
For instance you never had the option before of increasing or decreasing your data without affecting your other allowances, but you can now.

Wait, what? Can you elaborate?
The guy said the current data plans available to me are 100mb (£3), 500mb (£6) and 1gb (£10) unless I remained on my current plan which gives me 750mb (£5), which are you referring to?

The first three. On the current tariff rules you can choose whichever you want, and change it if required, which is something I found useful to do, on my older tariff which was similar to yours, but lower, I had no such choice, it was 500mb for £5 like it or lump it.
On the older tariff the bolt on was £5 regardless of the amount of data you had, and the level of data you had was determined by the price of the tariff itself, which was unfair to anyone who used few minutes or texts but wanted a decent data allowance as you had to pay way over the odds to get it. It's now possible o get 1GB with 100 minutes or even only pay for 100mb on a 900 min tariff to make it cheaper if you don't use a lot of data, for example. I realise it doesn't look so good from your perspective of having 750mb for £5, but i think having a choice is a good thing. I was saying you were wrong only in the sense that you stated the 500mb bolt on was the only one available to you.
While in your case you do get less data for £6, this can be said to be due to the general unfairness of those older tariffs as all customers on 600 mins or less got 500mb for £5 anyway (which you would have dropped to without saving any money if dropping your tariff under your current t&c's) and with the new one you do get mms and tethering included and surely a standardised price for everyone is fairer?

Oh yes, I know exactly what you mean now. I remember being forced onto the more expensive tarrif so I would be eligible for the larger data bolt-on.
I didn't know you can now choose between the three, that is handy.

It's one reason I came back to o2 from Orange.
I was on an iPhone tariff with Orange, data cap 750MB. My last month with them I hit over 800MB.
I knew when I came to o2 I could try the 500MB bolt-on and see if I could stay within (which I can comfortably, leaving downloading to wifi). But if my usage increases it's nice to know I can get the 1GB bolt-on for an extra £4.
