I can confirm that the setting work on mine as well.
Just need to find how to trick it into sending large pictures
im on the 02 network

I have been sending pictures by MMS from O2 and it seems to arrive at the other end (LG Viewty on 3) in 324x242, which is better than the 160x120 stated on page one of this thread, but still not brilliant. I stick to emailing them mainly, or posting them on picasa/flickr/facebook.

Anything sent to me seems to arrive in higher resolution (I have some 640x480 ones I have received)

Can anyone help here, I've tried all those settings and some others that I have found with Google and still can't send or receive MMS on my HTC Hero (it used to work)

I get the message Transient Failure when I try and download.

Hi there

we have an o2 simcard for pay as you go and would like to have it work in the HTC Hero. yesterday, it all worked fine but only to cause internet failure today. do we need to look out for special mobile network settings if we are in a pay-as-you-go-world?

After trying a lot of different combos, I finally worked out the correct settings for my Nexus One to get 3G mobile data & GPRS in the UK using O2 a "pay as you go" tariff. Here they are (below). I think if you have a paymonthly you change the payandgo part to say "wap" but can't vouch for that.
Go to Settings>Wireless & network Settings>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names
One of the APNs should have a green button ...select this one and enter the following details
name: https://wap.o2.co.uk
APN: payandgo.o2.co.uk
proxy: 119.113.200.195
port: 9201
username:payandgo
password: password
server:
MMSC:
MMS Proxy:
MMS Port:
MMC:234
MNC:10
Authentication type:None
APN type:default
Then make another one have these settings:
name: GPRS
APN: payandgo.o2.co.uk
proxy:
port:
username:payandgo
password: password
server:
MMSC:http://mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002
MMS Proxy:193.113.200.195
MMS Port:9201
MMC:234
MNC:10
Authentication type:mms
APN type:default
I deleted all the rest of the APNs which may not be necessary but is what I did and my 3G now works.

The information posted by LucyN is slightly incorrect, after having this issue myself I called up the techs and o2 and they managed to sort out the issue with the following settings.

Name: O2 Pay and Go
APN: payandgo.o2.co.uk
Proxy: 193.113.200.195
Port: 8080
Username: payandgo
Password: password
Server:
MMSC: http://mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002
MMS Proxy: 193.113.200.195
MMS Port: 8080
MMS Protocol: WAP 2.0
MCC: 234
MNC: 10
Authentication Type: PAP
APN Type: *

NOTE: The option to select the authentication type is only available on the Eclair firmware (2.1+) if you're still on the cupcake firmware (1.5) you will not have this option and be stuck with EDGE. I presume those of you still on 1.5 haven't yet received the over the air update, so you will need to use HTC's RRU found HERE. Follow the instructions on the HTC site of how to use this installation, and ensure to back up everything that is stored to the phone itself and unlink any accounts that require the phone's applications (Blizzard authenticator for example) as updating will format the phone. Your SD card and google account however will remain untouched.
