I was recently in hospital next to a guy with an O2 phone getting lots of "your recent car accident" scam calls. Suddenly, after many months since very few to me, I got several of identical format to his. How did they know my phone was near his? I did not use the NHS wifi, only mobile data.

This is purely coincidence.
Once your number has been obtained by one of these spam agencies, it will be sold on a list and you'll get hundreds of calls and texts.

The hospital had my number well before this visit and I did not change or confirm it around this time. The other guy was under a different consultant. I enter my number as little as absolutely possible on the web, which is why I have so few scam calls normally.
