I haven't made a note of mine and my phone has gone missing, I'm a pay monthly customer and wonder if o2 may have a record of my handsets IMEI number?

Yes give them a call. They can bar the SIM or the phone or both.

My understanding is a phone cannot be blocked without the IMEI number and serivce providers don't hold this information.

Ususally your IMEI number is displayed on your mobile phone's box, so have a look

Networks hold sim serial numbers, any IMEI number that the sim has been used alongside, dates used together, general locations etc

Type *#06# into the phone app, that should display the IMEI. Works on all phones I think.
