How can I prevent massive charges whilst in USA

I have 2 pay monthly accounts with o2.
I will be spending 2 weeks in USA and want to avoid large bills on return.
Quite often I get phishing calls and or voice mails from various companies, and if I don't recognise the number I do not answer, but I assume I will be charged for receiving voice messages. How can I stop this from happening?
I have also recently been receiving messages from 02 regarding downloading aps for making calls via wi-fi, not sure what this is about, but will I also incur charges for these?
For the first time ever, this month I have received a warning that I have used 80% of my data allowance, and cannot think what this would have been for.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Problem is ....you cannot! I was in the USA for 22 days, evidently over two billing periods and O2 charged me £40 extra for each period!! I even shut off my smart phone. But, when I complained they said that it was texted to me that the charge would be an extra £40. It was not clear that the £40 is for each monthly billing period! I am still awaiting an explanation from the O2 complaint service. I was otld they would deal with my complaint in 3 days!
Long story; you can tell I am not best pleased. You should call O2 and make sure you are clear of charges before you go!!! Good luck.

A persons lack of understanding is not grounds for complaint when all the info is readily available on forum or o2 website.

Simply turning off mobile/cellular data will prevent any charges at all. Do it preferably just before you board the flight.
