Femtocells

Hi guys,

I live in a fairly rural part of the UK and although the area is supposed to have O2 coverage, it is in fact pretty dire here. I am tied onto o2 for another 13 months with my iPhone and unless something is done by o2 to sort the signal out I will be voting with my feet next June.
Last year o2 & vodafone trialled 'Femtocell' technology. This is an internet based plug in tx/rx device which is stand alone and provides internet based mobile phone coverage inside buildings where there is insufficient signal from normal sources. Vodafone have embraced it and people are now getting the full benefit of full 3G phone signal in their homes/offices.
Where is the o2 version?
I know I'm a little bitter having been a Vodafone customer for many years, leaving just before they announced that they were getting iPhone, but surely o2 are embracing this technology as the o2 signal outside major towns everywhere appears to be generally poorer than my previous provider.
Does anyone have any thought on this and does anyone know if there are any plans for Femtocell technology to appear on the o2 books in the near future?

I had an email today regarding O2 connect, not quite the same as a fem but still good if you have limited reception.
"O2 Connect 1st Edition Trial
Congratulations! You've been selected to take part in the O2 Connect 1st Edition Trial.
We're running the trial over the next three months and will be inviting new batches of successful applicants to join the trial every two weeks. When we're ready to invite you onto the trial, you'll receive an email telling you how to download and get started with O2 Connect. This helps us to manage your feedback, as well as giving us time to fix any bugs and problems as quickly as possible."
Seems it will work with iphone and android. Wonder if you have to have o2 broadband though because im swapping to BT infinity over the next few weeks.

Did you register an interest in it or anything? Would be curious about this myself.
As far as your broadband goes, I doubt they'd insist on customers having O2 broadband, they just need to expose their VOIP kit to the internet and the client on the phone will do the rest.

Lucky you to get on the trial. I certainly could do with something. O2 are the only network now not to have a mast in my neighbourhood and I rely on signals from the motorway 1.5 miles away.
Still, I only live in a major city :robotwink:

They're not cheap, but check out the Coiler SH-900.
Some of my clients use them to boost 900MHz signal in office enviroments.
