Discussions about O2 and age verification

Just received a text from TPTB saying I need to confirm I'm over 18 to view adult material. Until then, it'll remain blocked on my phone. I don't have a credit card so I'll need to do this in store. Just wondering, I have no particular desire to view pornographic material or register to flirt websites on my phone but if I don't have this ban lifted, will it affect my general day-to-day browsing in any way? Otherwise, I won't bother.
Secondly, when did this come about? Never needed to confirm my age in the past. And why couldn't they have sorted this in store when I bought the phone?

Fair point.
Could we please have a forum for "age verification" -- that subject is going to recur forever. (I do NOT mean this suggestion seriously.)
More seriously: could the Home page show a list of ALL the forum titles, PLEASE? At least this would immediately show up the choice between "broadband" and "mobile broadband", which at present causes some difficulty.

I have Red Flagged my post above, which means it's highlighted to the Forum Moderators.
As the moderation is outsourced by O2, the forum members do not have any information as to the overall responsibilities of the Moderators.
It may well be that within their contract with O2, they are unable to delete or combine threads to maintain good housekeeping. Perhaps this is the responsibility of the Forum's O2 Admin members.
If this is the case then perhaps the Moderators would be able to add this function to the contract with O2's approval.

On an effectively moderated forum, the moderators would lock the incorrect locations and combine the various threads into one thread in the correct section............hint, hint, hint wink

Unlikely to happen, I've only ever known them to edit content or remove posts entirely.
We've been lobbying for a couple of years now for more active editing.

May be, but because it's outsourced perhaps that level of moderation was not included because it wasn't thought necessary.
Time moves on and if O2 want to maintain an acceptable and viable customer-led forum then it would be prudent to improve the contractual content of the moderation contractor.
As I said, I've red flagged it for the moderators so if they're pro-active then something should happen.

The mods have already changed their practices in the last 1-2 weeks with a great improvement. Now if they mod a post they leave a reason at the bottom of the post explaining why it has been modded and which mod did it.
Can't be more pleased as that is exactly how I do it on my forum, so they or o2 do take notice and can make changes to the way things are done.

I must be dull as I never had this text message or a web page refused to load due to age! slight_smile I have not verified my age either. As a test I turned off my WiFi on my phone and went to the Google Translation site. It popped up with no error! So either it's no longer on the black list or I am special! slight_smile
Is there somewhere on "MyO2" page that shows if 18+ bar is enabled or not?
Edit: Seems it is on on my account. Tried the Sun's Page 3 website and the Bango message appeared. In my case I mostly only ever get GPRS connections to the Internet so browsing via O2 is painful. If it's available I tend to hook up to The Cloud or BT OpenZone when out and about, which does not seem to have the same policy as O2!

Okay, was annoyed to have to give out credit card details on a pay monthly account which has already used my personal details to verify my age at sign up, but what the hell, I need to use my phone.

So I've verified my age and now the websites I want to go to won't load, they just redirect to O2 Active.
I cannot believe the way O2 have gone about this, SHODDY.
Edit: okay, restart my device...(something I rarely do since moving from a BB to an iPhone). That's fixed it. I'm still annoyed though.

I must be the oldest o2 user! Even though it blocked my iphone from the same sites as everyone else it never asked me to verify my age even after trying about 10 adult sites. So as I said earlier I just phoned CS and they removed it without any bother or C card details.
Either they think I am ancient or they realise I am past it!

It's not necessarily 'adult' sites, I was trying to look stuff up on the Urban Dictionary and it decided that was too old for me. Censorship rather than 'protection' that is. Pfft. Anyway.
