Around three months ago, I had reason to cancel my wife's Simplicity contract which was done with minimal fuss by a very helpful young lady in the department I had to deal with.

It transpired that after the account was closed there was a credit of some £3.00 which I left on there for a further month and also left the direct debit in place in case of unforeseen charges.

Anyway, after three months the credit just lay dormant on the closed account.

I called up this afternoon hoping to just donate this credit to a suitable charity of O2's choice but was surprised that O2 don't have such a policy in place. A lot of big companies do, indeed after closing one of her bank accounts and receiving a cheque for the balance, interest of around £8.00 was added to the account.

Rather than awaiting another cheque, I called up and asked to donate it to the bank's nominated charity. They did this immediately and that was the account closed without the need for any further actions by either myself or the bank.

In O2's same situation the money had to be transferred to my own Simplicity account which wasn't a problem but I would have liked a charity to benefit. It wasn't a large amount but all the same, every penny can be used to help or give aid.

Is it possible that this can be carried forward as a suggestion for O2 to put in place? I would think there would be plenty of dormant or closed accounts with small amounts of money left unclaimed so how about that money automatically going to charity, say after 12 months?

Just an idea.

I think that's an excellent idea and I hope O2 will take a serious look at it.
