new phone and no service

Hi everyone, I was hoping you could help. I have got a daughter a new iphone 5s. I have put in the sim, it's all set up with wifi etc except I have no service. It is 4g ready which there is 4g in the town where we go often but where we live it's only 3g. I remember doing something to my other daughters phone to get both and I just can't remember or find it anywhere what I did? Thank you x

Half right then, but yes they would need to do that to get the phone receiving 3/4g
Sim should already be set to (as long as the tariff allows 4g)
