Unlocking iphone 6s

If I unlock (online) my O2 PAYG iphone 6s - yet keep the same O2 sim - will I still be the same O2 customer, with the same account, tarif and balance, etc?

Why would I want to do this?  I'm happy with O2 in the UK - but am in US and in process of buying a USA sim for it - and transferring my US number from my dynasaur US flip phone (and crucially - keep the same old cheap tarif). They are giving me a hard time, saying it needs to be unlocked from O2. (GSM vs CDMA is not an issue as the iphone works on either)

Thanks for any help

@Pete22

The only thing that changes is your ability to use a non O2 SIM. Everything else stays the same.

I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Currently using:
Pixel 7a (O2 & Lyca), One Plus 6 (Sfr), iPhone 12 Pro Max (Vodafone)

Many thanks for such a speedy response!

Will unlock the phone and go back armed to my US provider.

Dear MI5. Sorry, but you got this one wrong.

When I unlocked my PAYG O2 iphone 6s (intending to keep the sim for UK use), O2 wiped out my credit balance of £26.

I specifically asked about balance. Even O2 didn't warn me.

Sorry @Pete22 but I am not wrong.

Unlocking your phone will not wipe out your balance.

Contact customer services to find out where your balance went but I can 100% assure you it was nothing to do with unlocking.
