I am so confused, can someone solve this mystery! I got my Iphone5 7 mos ago. I have NOT dropped my iphone5 in water, or excessively splashed it. Yes, I have used it in the rain.
The home button has quit working; however not putting a high correlation to the rain as the home button on my husbands and my daughters also only work sporadically, so both rely on the assist. I hate the assist and as my iphone is only 7mos old, took it in to O2 to be repaired. Repair department said £194 for fixing or £199 for replacement iphone. I asked for it back. I asked for explanation from store and they said it could be due to having it in humid areas (e.g. the shower room). That seems to contradict the last info out from Apple http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3302
Upon examining iphone "water sensor" by sim card is still white. I realise there are 2 other sensors which are internal and hard to get water to.
How have my water sensors been activated?
I am slightly confused as - I returned my leased iphone in Feb2013 only to learn there was water damage with that phone as well --- really? Again that iphone was not dropped in water.... the most it was in my pocket in the rain. BUT THIS IS ENGLAND!!!
2 phones not dropped in water but yet 2 "water damage" charges from O2.
Solved! Go to Solution.

Once you have been to apple and if the agree it is not water damaged ask for it in writing and then lodge a formal complaint. Until enough customers lodge formal complaints the outsourced repair company will get away with it.

Even if Apple do say it is water damaged (which from the way the OP has described it they wont as the sensor isn't red) the most they will charge for a replacement not covered by the warranty is £186 (£180 in store) which is still less than what O2 are asking

I think that would be at the store managers discretion.
Or maybe offer a refurbished iPhone at a lesser price, like an out of warranty option.
grrr wish i could remember where i watched it!!! i actually think a few people had complained about certain providers not replacing due to "water damage" that had appeared not to have come into contact with any water!! Actually might have been to do with insurance cover???
If i remember correctly the advice given was always return to Apple when in warranty, and that ALL indicators had to be red, and something about a phone being left in humid conditions setting them off i.e. in a kitchen or bathroom.
Edit, more is coming back to me lol, think they were saying the indicator "in" the phone was the benchmark, if that was red you’re screwed, as in no way that could turn with being submerged in water, and that the external-ish ones turning red did not constitute a none replacement???
Or I could have dreamed the whole thing!!! Lol ( ill look to see if I can find it on the net ,what show it was! )

I stand corrected! They've put their out of warranty prices up again then. Was £186 when I smashed my 5 last year (insurance paid most of it though). I guess they put them up when the new phones were released
