Get in touch with their support and hopefully they will sort it for you.

I have version 5.4.12 so try uninstalling updates to Google play which should then replace it with the latest version.

I would personally update everything first and then try again, and then if it still doesn't work than ring their support.

Android will notify you when you have any updates. If none are showing in play store >My apps then there aren't any.
Not all devices use the same version.
As I said previously, Google support is the only way you will likely get this sorted.

Seems to be on an older version of Google play, not that it should make a difference....

This player seems to be a bit limited from what I've read: http://www.techradar.com/reviews/audio-visual/av-accessories/nexus-player-1271514/review

Yeah, it seems that when i made a purchased from the google play store on the player using my google play credit that got the ball rolling for my debit card to be used making purchases through my nexus player, really strange but everything is working fine now, i wasn't able to make purchases either on the google play movies app neither on my nexus player till i used my google play credit first, which i only had 50p on... i bought a game for 40p using the credit then my debit card kicked in to play. Like i said before it was like google was blocking me from making purchases on my player till i used my credit
