deleting notifications

i received a notification message whch showed as an email re4ceived and an envelop top right of screen. pressing clear removes message but not '1' on email icon on home page. every time i start up envelope appears again with message. phone is samsung galaxy gt-s5830i. does anyone know how i can delete it. i must be missing something in the tools.

Yes, it will do. The notification bar (curtain) is different to the email icon. You still need to press the email app and actually open or delete the email for the icon to disappear....

Once you open the email the icon will go away.

thanx for this MI5. when i pull down curtain with ,green wifi, bt, gps etc and with notification envelope. then  click clear, envelope goes but email sign still shows 1. when restarting after turning off, envelope has returned.
