Why do O2 charge so much for picture messages when other platforms (messenger, WhatsApp etc) offer free messaging and why is it when my message reaches a certain length it charges me for an MMS without warning. It just converts it to an MMS then sends it without my say so!

MMS (old tech) still uses gprs rather than mainstream data, hence the charges.
You can turn off MMS on most phones and set a warning giving you the choice.

I don't know why they structure the price as they do. It was always the case that an mms consisted of multiple texts hence the cost to the network. However, the cost for an mms is too high for sure.

More here that may help you.

@Pictures They charge so much because they can. It's called greed. We see people getting caught out on a daily basis. If you're aware of Whatsapp and Messenger, just don't send photos using O2's text service.

I DO NOT WORK FOR O2
