Disable mobile data except MMS

Hi there,

 

I'm thinking of buying a Samsung Galaxy S3, but seeing as it will be on Pay As You Go I want to be able to disable mobile data but still be able to use MMS.

 

As I understand it you can't disable mobile data while still being able to use MMS.

 

But from what I've been reading you may be able to do just that by changing your APN type to just MMS, would that work or am I way off?

 

I'm new to smartphones by the way lol.

Don't get a smartphone without a data allowance. They are designed to use data and will not be suitable for your requirements.

Hi, the easiest work around for this would be to turn mobile data on & off within the notification panel. It literally takes two seconds.

Perhapes, but I might not know that someone has sent me a MMS in order to turn it on, plus I don't want apps using data for that short time that it's on.

I agree with MI5 there is little point in paying out for a smart phone without data, it's what they are built for.

I've got an S3 and I receive mms with the mobile data turned off, the text message it's self turns mobile data on and then back off after the text is received.

Hi Kirell,

 

Does it? That's strange, everywhere I've read says it needs mobile data on in order to do that, and that it doesn't switch on and off automatically for MMS.

 

I'm actually thinking of getting the S3 mini (sorry missed that out before lol), do you think it would behave in the same way? If it does, that's all I wanted it to do.

The S3 mini will behave in the same way, as would any other smartphone.

 

MMS requires an active data connection to function.

 

It is possible to have data without MMS, but to my knowledge you can not have it the other way round.

 

I will have a scoot around and try to clarify though.

 

Edit: This was taken from another carrier but may work.

 

Create a broken APN

 

Name:  O2 Dummy APN
APN: dummy
Proxy: Not Set
Port: Not Set
Username: dummy
Password: dummy
Server: not set

MCC: 999

MMS (Correct working settings)

To do it the way you are trying would cost you £1 every time you received an MMS as the data port would be open other apps would hijack it. You can't live on wifi alone unless you never move from your house as you will find out soon enough slight_smile
