Data use + MMS costs

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi all.  I'm new to Android (Galaxy S5) after years with iPhone.  Two questions please:

  1. Despite enabling 'web only updates' on data-guzzling apps, I'm still using data allowance despite not using apps or internet today.  Only about 1.5mb in 6 hours, but still confused as to why.
  2. I noticed that a text sent with emoji was marked MMS.  Does that create MMS costs on an unlimited text contract?  (Two texts I sent with photos were charged as MMS.)

Thanks

Do you mean 'WiFi Only Updates'? If not, you're using data to update your apps, which will eat up your allowance.

Also, certain emoji's are considered as MMS and MMS is charged at 40p per message. You would also need data enabled to send the MMS, so that will use your allowance too.

You will still use data if not connected to wifi. The update only on wifi is for core app updates only not general use.
If you want to save data only open the apps when connected to wifi - this was exactly the same on your iPhone.
