Advanced notice:

The White Room Thursday Quiz is open to all members.

The next White Room Thursday Quiz will be on Thursday 29 August 2019.

To give new members, and those who have not played or are unfamiliar with the quiz, some idea of the questions, I can reveal that, over the weekend, I chose six questions for the next White Room Thursday Quiz - on 29 August - from these categories:

- history; sport [football]; words; literature; geography; music - so there may well be a question to which you might know the answer.

Each week, a contestant is chosen at random by @EmilieT. So why not put your name forward?

Please pm me [ @Mi-Amigo ] with your name and I will add it to the list of members who have already been a contestant - @Cleoriff ; @jezza1234 ; @pgn and @gmarkj - for this week`s quiz.

The questions and the contestant will be announced on Wednesday 28 August.

Even if you are not to be a contestant, you can, as others do, play along with the quiz.

Thanks for the interest and support for the White Room Thursday Quiz.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask on this thread or pm me and will reply.

Best of luck with your answers @gmarkj

Thanks @Cleoriff and @jonsie for playing alone.

As mentioned, the answer to one or more may not be what is generally assumed to be correct Don't know

It`ll be interesting to see, after the results and answers are revealed, how many each of you got right...

Going to do this now while I have 5 minutes - busy packing for a weekend away later so no time!

Wish me luck (or at least, don't laugh too hard at my ignorance...)

Q1 [history]: Who introduced tobacco smoking to Britain?

I would guess Chris Columus on return from America (not idea, just pulling a name from the ether)

Q2 [sport]: Where was the first FA Cup Final played?

Going to go oddball with this and guess it is not Wembley (too obvious) - perhaps Twickenham?

Q3 [words]: What is a sika?

A type of deer.

Q4 [literature]: Who wrote "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy"?

I actually know this one (or at least think I do) - John le Carre (spelling maybe off?)

Q5 [geography]: Which is the largest island in the Inner Hebrides?

Scotland (no clue!!)

Q6 [music]: How many strings does a sitar have?

Torn between 4 and 9. Going with 4.

1. Kilroy Silk Cut

2. I know this for sure being a footy fanatic. The Kensington Oval way back in 1872 when Wanderers whupped Royal Engineers 1-0. Sadly one of the teams who I watched way back in the early 60's, Bury hold the record of 6-0 against Derby in 1903 (at The Crystal Palace) which was only equalled last year by Man City. The EFL in their wisdom have seen fit to toss them out of existence when a deal to save them was ready within days.

3. Obvious innit...use Grammarly @Mi-Amigo !!

4. Correct @gmarkj  actually spelt Jaeger-LeCoultre

5. Sort of @gmarkj  although strictly speaking, Scotland ain't no island despite their wish to be so wink

6 A sitar can have between 18-21 strings and the one GH used on Norwegian Wood had, I believe, the full set.

Q1 [history]: Who introduced tobacco smoking to Britain?

Sir Walter Raleigh

Q2 [sport]: Where was the first FA Cup Final played?

Burnley.

Q3 [words]: What is a sika?

A player in a Quidditch game 😁

Q4 [literature]: Who wrote "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy"?

John le Carrè

Q5 [geography]: Which is the largest island in the Inner Hebrides?

Skye.

Q6 [music]: How manystrings does a sitar have?

Just in it for the fun 🤣

Answers given by @gmarkj

Q1 [history]: Who introduced tobacco smoking to Britain?

A1 I would guess Chris Columus on return from America (not idea, just pulling a name from the ether)

- incorrect = Christopher Columbus`s visit is too early, but, at least, you did not give the commonly said wrong answer - Sir Walter Raleigh.

The correct answer is Sir John Hawkins, who, in 1565, having traded slaves in Venezula was returning to England when, in need of water, put into Fort Caroline, Florida, where he observed local inhabitants smoking dried tobacco leaves. Hawkins brought leaves back to England in 1565. Some 20 years later, in 1585, Hawkins` cousin, Sir Francis Drake, showed Sir Walter Raleigh how to smoke tobacco using a clay pipe.

Q2 [sport]: Where was the first FA Cup Final played?

A2 Going to go oddball with this and guess it is not Wembley (too obvious) - perhaps Twickenham?

- not Twickenham, but, as you correctly said not Wembley, I will award a half star

The correct answer is The Oval, London where Wanders beat Royal Engineers 1-0

Q3 [words]: What is a sika?

A3. A type of deer.

- correct = star

Q4 [literature]: Who wrote "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy"?

A4 I actually know this one (or at least think I do) - John le Carre (spelling maybe off?)

- correct = star

Q5 [geography]: Which is the largest island in the Inner Hebrides?

A5 Scotland (no clue!!)

- well, the Inner Hebrides are in Scotland [although Scotland is not an island], so I`ll be generous and award a half star

The correct answer is Mull = not the Mull of Kyntyre which is on the mainland [I`ve been there and seen Macca`s cottage].

Q6 [music]: How many strings does a sitar have?

A6 Torn between 4 and 9. Going with 4.

- incorrect. The correct answer is 18-20.

Well done @gmarkj - you are awarded star star plus two half star

I don`t even know where to begin with regards the answers given by @jonsie and @pgn - some of these were brilliant joy - and others you did get right. Thanks for playing along and making it fun.

I am interested to know how many @Cleoriff got right Thoughful

To give a hint at the questions for next week, I will be choosing the six questions over the weekend from these categories - People; History; Geography; Words; Nature; Currency - so plenty of time for those who have put their names forward as contestants or are playing along to do some "homework".

The quiz is open to everyone, so if anyone wants to be a contestant, please pm me [ @Mi-Amigo ] and I`ll add your name to the list to be drawn at random by @EmilieT .
