Welcome to the Boxing Day Brain Teaser 2024

The Brain Teaser is open to all members of the 02 Community.

Those wishing to take part must pm [private message] me [@Mi-Amigo] with their answers between

       9 am today [Thurs 26 Dec 2024] and 9 pm tomorrow [Fri 27 Dec 2024]

so those who are busy or out-and-about will have a chance to join in.

Please DO NOT post answers on the thread.

Q1 This Christmas four young men - DAMIEN, CHRISTOPHER, BENJAMIN, and ARCHIE - decided to spend

         Xmas away from home. Each of them went to a different city.

         DAMIEN went to Amsterdam; Christopher went to Rio de Janeiro; Benjamin went to London.

         Did Archie go to Antwerp, Berlin, Paris, or Rome ?

 

Q2 What is the following words have in common

          BLUR    GRANGE    GREEK     MELLOW     ROD

 

Q3 APPLE costs 20p;  BANANA cost 30p; GRAPEFRUIT costs 40p 

        How much does PEAR cost ?

 

Q4 If 1 = F; 2 = E; 3 = I; 4 = R

       What does 5 = ?

 

Q5 Joe has been going to the same cafe every day [Monday to Friday] for his morning hot drink.

       Last Monday, Joe went to his usual cafe for his usual morning hot drink when he saw a sign which read

          "As from today - Monday - the price of a cup of coffee has increased from £1 to £1.25"

       Joe ordered his usual hot drink, paid for it, sat down and drank it.

       On each day for the rest of the week [Tue to Fri], Joe went to his usual cafe, ordered his usual hot drink,

       paid for it, and sat down and drank it.

       By Friday afternoon, Joe had ordered, paid for, and drunk five cups of his usual hot drink, but Joe had

       only paid a total amount of £5 for his five hot drinks.

       How is this possible ?

         After breakfast, Ben left home to go to work in his new job across London, and said to himself

          "I have nothing to hide about now being a tax inspector".

         On his way to his new office, Ben sat reading a book. He arrived at his new office early and was

         pleased he had not had yo travel of the Underground.

         How did Ben get from his hom to his new office ?

       Part of name of person = part of name of famous place in city went to...

       DAMien = Dam Square, Amsterdam;  CHRISTopher = Christ the Redeemer, Rio; 

       BENjamin = Big Ben, London; ARChie = Arc de Triumph, Paris

 

Q2 What is the following words have in common

          BLUR    GRANGE    GREEK     MELLOW     ROD

A2  Change one letter to make name of a colour - 

         blur = blue; grange = orange; greek = green; mellow = yellow; rod = red

 

Q3 APPLE costs 20p;  BANANA cost 30p; GRAPEFRUIT costs 40p

A3  Pear costs 20p. Cost is 10p for each vowel in name of fruit.

       1 = 1st letter in First; 2 = 2nd letter in sEcond; 3 = 3rd letter in thIrd; 4 = 4th letter in fouRth
