I have been on O2 for quite a while now and changed my phone two weeks ago to one of the smart ones. But now I barely get any signal in my home to receive calls. I do sometimes but it is a rareity, but I did always with my old phone. Why would a change in phone make a difference to my signal to the O2 network?

If your old phone was 2G only it probably got a better signal than the new one.
Turning off 3G should help if you don't need much in the way of data.
