Moving to australia - will I be able to have my O2 phone unlocked there? HTC Desire

I have just given 30 days cancellation on my phone as I am off to Australia. Does anyone have experience with getting a phone unlocked once I am there? I saw some posts that suggested there were problems. Help please?

You will have much less of a problem getting the phone unlocoked here. There is sufficient time before you go.

Use the handset unlock form

Thanks for the advice. I am leaving 26th July. The contract cancels 7 August. From your experience how long does it take to unlock the phone? I am a complete phone ignorant , so these questions may be quite stupid BUT once the phone is unlocked then I guess that you have no service until you sign to another provider? Problem is I would like to use the phone until I can get another provider in Australia. In my naive world I had hoped I could use it until I get to a phone shop in Australia and have it unlocked in Australia. Is this possible?

which phone do you have

But it can take from 3-28 days depending on handset make and model.

If you tell us which phone we can offer advice

once unlocked any network will work including your o2 sim until contract ends

I would fill in the form. If you are on P&G the cost is £15 which is taken from the credit on the phone.

If you are on a contract the cost is free.

OK Thanks for that advice. You mentioned 3-28 days. Will the unlock still work if I have already left the UK - which is 16 days from now?
