How long are text messages held for when your phone is off/no signal

I switched my phone off for 2 weeks while I was on holiday, and when I got back not all of my text messages came through. would the sender be notified that it failed to send?

On the initial sending of the text message sometimes the sender is told a text failed and to try again.

Some Networks have a delivery report system but 02 does not have this method anymore unless the sender puts *0# before the text {i think}
