When your contract expires it becomes a one month rolling contract. You would have to give 30 day's notice to cancel. Normally you would be able to upgrade at least a month, or sometimes sooner, before your contract expires. You can cancel your contract at any time, but if it's before the expiry of the contract you would have to pay £36 x however many months are remaining at that point.

Your contract will carry on as a rolling 30 day contract unless you give 30 days notice to end the contract after 23 months. The terms of the contract will remain the same.
It's possible you can upgrade after 23 months or if you want to leave to go to another network and keep your number, just ask for your PAC which you give to your new network. O2 will send you a final bill once you have used your PAC.
