The iPhone from Apple will work on the O2 Network, Yes.
iPhones purchased at sim free are unlocked to all networks from Apple.
iPhones taken out in contract from Apple lock out to the first SIM card placed in them.
To take advantage of it's 4G capabilities you'll need to be in a 4G area. Check here with your postcode http://status.o2.co.uk
If you don't have a Nano Sim Card then these can be picked up from any O2 Shop and they can also perform the sim swap to move your tariff and mobile number from your old sim to the new one.
If your using a nano sim already then have a look at it to see if it says 4G on it.
You can perform the swap my sim procedure yourself. Phone O2 http://www.o2.co.uk/contactus and ask for an account specific blank SIM card to be posted to you and when you receive it use the link. It's important you ask for an account specific sim as payg are different to contract ones. It takes from to few minutes to approximately 24 hours to settle. Turn airplane mode on and off every 30 minutes or so to help the re connection.
When you place your nano sim in the iPhone 6 you should get all the set up texts from O2 ref data connection and mms etc.
If for some reason you don't then text ACTIVE to 2020, save the settings and reboot your phone.
More help here http://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Apple-iOS-Devices-iPhone-iPad/Connecting-iPhone-to-Data-Services/m-p/54...
If your moving from a non iPhone to the iphone 6 then it's best to contact O2 customer services to ask to be placed on idata settings.
If your already using an iPhone then please create a back up to iTunes and or iCloud so you can transfer your settings and data to the iPhone 6.
Nice choice of phone. 😄

I would suggest performing the swapmysim which moves your tariff and mobile number to the correct sized SIM card. Make sure it's an account specific one as they hold different info between payg and contract ones.
http://swapmysim.o2.co.uk
And check your service status to ensure your masts are ok http://status.o2.co.uk
Where did you get the iPhone 4s.
I'm hoping if via privately then it has not been imei blocked by the network due to theft or fraud.

Please bear in mind that although you have a 4G sim the 4s isn't compatible with 4G. You will still however be able to use 3G.

Good luck, keep rebooting the phone with the new sim in until it connects to the network, maybe at 30 minute intervals.
