Afternoon everyone,

We’ve got some news & info to share with our Sony Xperia Z, Z1, Z2 & Z3 series device users. This week Sony have announced their Android Lollipop rollout plans, starting with the Z3 and Z3 Compact in the Nordics and Baltics regions a few days ago. As with most rollouts this will be phased and there are no specific timeframes set for which areas will see the update next, but we are working closely with Sony and will update you once we know more about a UK launch.

What can we expect?
Some awesome new features of course! Here’s what you can expect to see with the Z3 and Z3 Compact update:

  • Fresh, streamlined looks - based on Google’s material design, but retaining Sony’s minimalistic approach to interface and application design
  • New look notifications and lock screen - with fully customizable settings, so users only get the information they need
  • Multi user profiles and guest mode - making it easy for family and friends to use a single device, or the creation of dual environments for in and outside work
  • Android for Work - not only are business-ready Xperia smartphones and tablets unique devices for work - with waterproof form factors, great battery life and productivity features -they will now also be part of Google’s Android for Work ecosystem
  • Better storage control and customisation – with the option to easily move applications from internal memory to SD card – giving users more control over content, something particularly useful for devices with slightly less space

More update info
Once the update arrives, you’ll receive an in-phone notification – you’ll have the option to either download over-the-air (via wifi), or connect to a computer using PC Companion or Bridge for Mac. The update is estimated to last around 20-25min and will require approximately 1.2GB of free space on your internal memory.

Other Z-series devices
Sony are committed to bringing Lollipop to their entire line-up of Z devices. Though the rollout is starting first with the Z3 and Z3 Compact, it will arrive to the Z2, Z1 and Z series devices. At present we have no further information or timescales but we will update this thread with more info as and when Sony progress through their rollout plans.

We’ll let you know closer to when we expect the update to start rolling out. In the meantime, what are you looking forward to most about this new Lollipop update?

2nd June Update
Lollipop is now rolling out for our Xperia Z phone and tablet users from today, with version number 10.6.A.0.454. Please do let us know your thoughts once the update has been applied. Anything you like, don't like, new features, how's performance etc.

And with that... Lollipop is now available on O2 for all our Xperia devices - Z, Z Ultra, Z1, Z2 & Z3. We hope for those of you already running Lollipop, you're having an even better experience than with KitKat or even Jellybean before that.

My last experience with an o2 sony ( Ericsson) phone and android updates was an xperia ray a few years ago. If I remember rightly, Ice cream sandwich was released by Sony, but o2 blocked it and it never got updated, even though other networks did release it. Hoping my z3 compact fares better!

O2 had only released 4.4.4 a couple of months ago at that came out more than a year ago.

We're going to be waiting - a LONG time.

The fact that the forum updates posts, (they think that an update that's been out for weeks and makes no reference to O2 is good enough) will silence us and keep us waiting..

EE used to be the worst at sending updates but now this is a bit much. They already have the update on s4 and s5. Whats the update now? Still waiting for it on my z3 😞

Little bit disappointing since we were led to believe that the lollipop update would arrive for the z3/z3c near the end of March, It's now April and there is still no sign of the update, no new posts since the 20th displaying information that was released on the 16th. Could O2 seriously not just give us an estimate of when the update will be released since I'm getting pretty bored of waiting now.

Reading other topic on updates, it would appear that the world has gone Samsung, so any other phone just has to wait until o2 have satisfied all the Samsung users!

Not sure all Samsung users would agree @blighty59 ..I have a Note 3 and haven't got Lollipop yet....

Though I am in no rush...

It's nice to know that there's some communication on this, however I am about three weeks into owning a z3c, the update was announced actually before I recieved the device, so I haven't really been doing much customisation thinking that some things will change anyway (for the better, L looks really great and less skinned).

Will keep an eye on this, and when other carriers get updated.

Most regions have the update now, UK is not one of them, to be fair to O2, they are normally quick with Sony updates and the last few xperia devices I've had O2 firmware came out before UK standard.
O2 probably know as much as you or I at this point as Sony is a typical Japanese company in the fact they don't discuss stuff in too much detail.
@Chris_K is the best person to give official O2 feedback and information on this but if the device team have passed the update back to Sony then they will probably be in the dark, until Sony push it out, too.
