Data downloads - a significant problem

I have a HTC Desire S which I have had for 18 months. I am on Ice Cream Sandwich.

The problems started a few months ago and the O2 Gurus wont or cant help!

The phone is downloading a lot of data on the 02 network resulting in me being throttled half-way through the month. I have used an app called Onavo which tells me that it is "HTC Apps" which is downloading lots of data.

I have no idea how to prevent any app from downloading from the internet. I would like the apps just to download background data on wifi rather than over the data network but I cant seem to do that.

When I asked for a breakdown of my bill it shows that I am downloading at "mobile.02.co.uk" but doesnt share what apps are downloading and I dont know how to stop an app from using the data network - even apps like facebook.

Can anyone help me:

1) Work out what apps use the network

2) How to tailor an app to only use wifi

Before the last few months I was using about 300mb a month ( I mainly use wifi) my last bill stated it was 1gb - I dont think I am using the phone 3 times as much.

Any help would be appreciated.

Did the issue start after the upgrade to ICS? If so, I would back up and do a factory reset (Hold vol down + power to boot into bootloader menu and choose clear data/reset option). That might remove the issue if it's a software conflict giving you the isssue. To use wifi only has to be written into the app itself, so if you go into each app, then menu >settings the option to update on wifi only will be shown if available.

Thanks for this - not sure I am ready for a factor resent just yet! 🙂

The two apps that it might be (mail and facebook) both dont offer wifi updating - I really didnt think this would be so hard!!!

I think I found a partial solution. If you press the menu button on the Google Play Store -> settings -> and tick a box called "update over Wi-fi only" this ensures that your updates (of which there are lots at the moment) are done over wi-fi.

HTC apps have nothing to do with Google Play apps. You would need to do the same for your HTC market settings.
